The Challenge of . . .
Heroism
In this unit we will be looking at The Challenge of Heroism. We will be looking at specifically what defines a hero, and how the Hero's Journey archetype appears in stories throughout time. There will be two writing assignments to accompany this unit. First the students will be asked to write an original Hero's Journey Narrative. The students will then have to write a Definition Essay on Heroism.
Utopia
This unit we will be looking at Utopia. Specifically we will be looking at to what extent a perfect society can exist. We will also be looking at what makes an effective argument. In this unit we will be holding a Socratic Seminar as we read Fahrenheit 451. Then the students will be writing an Argumentative essay on a world issue.
MAking a DIFFERENCE
In this unit we will be studying the Holocaust. We will be specifically looking at why it is important to learn about the Holocaust, and how can one person make a difference. There will be two presentations in this unit, the first presentation is "Presenting Voices from the Holocaust" in which the students will research a holocaust victim, and the second is a persuasive speech on making a difference.
Comedy
In this unit we will be looking at Comedy. Specifically we will be looking at how do writers and speakers use comedy to convey truth. We will also be looking at what makes an effective performance of a Shakespearean Comedy. In this unit the students will be asked to analyze high and low comedy. They will also be asked to preform a scene from a Shakespearean Comedy.
